MIPS Participation Status Letters Are Coming

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) completed its review of claims and is currently informing practices which clinicians need to take part in the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), which is an important part of the new Quality Payment Program (QPP). CMS has estimated that over 400,000 clinicians are eligible to participate in the MIPS track of the QPP in 2017
Letters are being mailed this week and next week from the Medicare Administrative Contractor that processes Medicare Part B claims. This letter will tell the participation status of each MIPS clinician associated with the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) in a practice. It lets you know if your group and the individuals in your group (if those individuals choose to report separately to the program) are exempt from MIPS because of the following:
  • Being a low-volume clinician (being below established program thresholds); or
  • Not being among the categories of clinicians included in the program in the first year.
In addition to the letter, there are two attachments. Attachment A provides low-volume and non-eligible provider type information in a list for each clinician and group. Attachment B has further guidance, including helpful questions and answers about the QPP.

CMS recently posted a sample of the letter and both Attachment A and B on its website. Below please find links to these materials.
